Located within a Class A Nature Reserve, Barrow Island is subject to one of Australia’s strictest quarantine systems to protect its unique environment. All personnel and equipment entering the island underwent quarantine procedures and inspection before mobilisation.

The survey was undertaken to support the design of new facilities within the existing gas plant. A key objective was to investigate subsurface conditions beneath areas that had previously been levelled using engineered fill placed over naturally uneven ground. Attention was given to identifying potential cavities within the underlying geology, along with buried infrastructure such as electrical services in areas adjacent to existing roads.

The investigation combined a 48-channel Landstreamer seismic system with 4.5 Hz geophones and a sledgehammer source, together with a MALA GX 160 MHz Ground Penetrating Radar system integrated with RTK positioning. Using these complementary methods allowed us to efficiently characterise near-surface conditions and provide valuable information for engineering design
